in nigerian universities, course reps are the bridge between students and
lecturers. they collect attendance, relay announcements, coordinate deadlines. all through whatsapp groups
and mental notes. there's no actual tool for this role. the information lives in chat threads that nobody
scrolls back through.
courseflow is a web platform with three user types: course reps,
students, and lecturers. reps can broadcast announcements, track attendance, and manage deadlines. lecturers
post materials and view attendance data. students get one place for everything. the backend is node.js with
postgresql via prisma, since attendance, courses, and student records are all related and need to stay
consistent as cohorts and semesters change.
postgresql made sense here because attendance, courses, and student
records are all related — a relational database keeps those links solid instead of fighting the data.
react on the frontend because the dashboard needs to
feel responsive. reps are checking this between classes on their phones, so mobile-first design was
non-negotiable.
this started as a frustration. i was a course rep and hated the chaos.
building it taught me that the hardest part of making software for a niche role is that nobody else has
built reference implementations. there were no existing tools to study. i had to figure out what course reps
actually need by being one.
